The Dick Whittington occupies St Nicholas House, a late fifteenth century merchant’s house. It was built for Richard Whittington, nephew of Dick Whittington of pantomime fame, it boasts having a fascinating history. Elizabeth I is said to have stayed here in 1574. It didn’t become a pub until the 1980s, having been restored by the Civic Trust and City Council. The pub takes its title from the most famous son of the family, Richard ( Dick ) Whittington who lived from 1350 to 1423 and was Lord Mayor of London three times.
